Dark Knight Rises soundtrack

July 13th, 2012

I’ve been listening to bits of the soundtrack for Dark Knight Rises over the last couple of days. It’s really good. It’s very familiar from Dark Knight’s soundtrack, but more aggressive and soaring.

Batman Begins had a fairly restrained soundtrack, reflecting Bruce Wayne searching for Batman’s identity. Dark Knight felt more complete, and introduced Joker’s uncertainty. Dark Knight Rises takes that solidification of Batman’s identity a step further, embodying Gotham’s Dark Knight.

I found Dark Knight’s soundtrack left me wanting. The aggressive tracks ended just as they felt like they were going to get going. Dark Knight Rises brings that conclusion.

Bane’s influence is good. Joker gave the soundtrack a reckless, unsettling feel. Bane brings a solidity, and sometimes military precision.

If the soundtracks reflect the progression of the movies, the final installments of Nolan’s Batman trilogy is going to be awesome.

Daft Punk – Inception Mashup

A mashup of the TRON Legacy and Inception themes. It made get the Inception soundtrack, which is actually much more epic than the film!

Jack Conte (the guy that made this mashup) has a website full of covers and music videos. Others are worth checking out. http://jackcontemusic.com/

The 139 Mix Tape

July 18th, 2011

I recently posted about the Definitive Daft Punk mashup. This is from the same guy: a 139 track, 45 minute mashup of the songs that have influenced him. I've listened to it quite a few times over the last month. Its got some magic moments, and features lots of music that was going around me as I grew up (although I didn't actually listen to much music until my late teens).

The last 5 minutes is particularly cool. There's a wonderfully cheesy bit, then about 1m30 from the end a mashup of two songs that got me confused. I recognised the lyrics being sung, but had no idea where from. I went on a hunt and discovered the song featured in the bouncy-balls Sony Bravia advert is actually an acoustic cover of an 80s dance track! It's the original dancey version that features in this mashup.

The most frustrating aspect of the mix is the sense of being teased with a track that never comes to fruition. The mix has helped me understand what I love about long-form mixes – the teasing that comes with little motifs, almost subliminal, so that when the track is actually played it feels as though it's been straining to escape, and has finally been released.

I was disappointed how few of the clips I recognised. Anyway, the video is pretty awesome.

Making of Tron: Legacy – Audio Awesome mix

May 19th, 2011

This is an outline of how I produced my Tron: Legacy Audio Awesome Soundtrack mix, which you can read more about and download here.

A warning: This post is quite long, and has a fair bit of detail. I wanted to put this info out there, but haven’t spent a huge amount of time tidying it up or making it digestible. Ask questions in the comments if you’d like more info or clarification.

Tron: Legacy – Audio Awesome Soundtrack Mix

May 13th, 2011

The whole of Tron: Legacy ties together so well visually, musically and aurally. Rather than produce a pure music edit that’s faithful to the film, I selectively blended in the audio from the movie to increase the power of some moments.
